COMMUNICATION TO THE PLAYER

Lets get deeper into game design! One of the key things and most important areas in game design is - communication!
Design is a lot about how you communicate to the player!
Quite often one can see how the problems in just how things are presented to the player, gets the player confused.
You need to be clear and consistent in our communication to the player. When players get confused, they will easily quit.

The other common problem is either showing too little or having too much conflicting information. Both can result in the same result, player quits. You need to ensure the player’s know all they need to know.

TETRIS SAMPLE - HOW DOES TETRIS COMMUNICATE IT? Tetris Game Design Examples

In Tetris you need to communicate these to the player:

  • What are the controls?
  • What is the goal of the game?
  • What is the objective in the level?
The controls you can present by showing them in a tutorial popup image visually without any text needed.
Once a Tetris piece hits the bottom of the level, you need to show with visual feedback if the piece is placed correctly or not.
Player needs to keep the pile as low as possible. Once the pieces hit the top of the level, player fails the level. This also you can communicate visually, like making the background flash red.
